The City of Creve Coeur has commissioned local artist Genevieve Esson to design street banners to be displayed along a 1.5 mile stretch of Olive Boulevard. The banners, which were recommended by the Creve Coeur Arts Committee, will be displayed for the first time during September and October 2016 and will then join a rotation of seasonal banners.
In conjunction with the display on Olive Boulevard, the Creve Coeur Arts Committee will host an art exhibit at the Creve Coeur Government Center, 300 N. New Ballas Road, beginning August 19 through September 30, 2016. The exhibit will commence with an art opening on Friday, August 19 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers of the Creve Coeur Government Center. The opening will include a display of 22 unique 30-inch by 60-inch vinyl banners designed by Esson along with the original scaled-down canvases on which she painted the designs. The Arts Committee instructed Esson to design the banners using the theme of “Whimsical Motion.”
“The banners convey a sense of how the automobile and daily traffic has affected our perceptions of the world around us,” said Esson. “My artwork is not a map of Creve Coeur, but a general abstract viewpoint with touches of red, yellow, green, lights, road signs, street lines, buildings, store signs, the sky, billboards and other vehicles in a whirring maze of whimsy and line movement, flashing colors and wires cutting through the sky, becoming an abstract blaze of colors and expression.”
After the opening, the banners will be hung on the decorative street lamps along Olive Boulevard between North New Ballas Road and North Mason Road. The original canvas paintings, which will be available for sale, will remain on display in the Government Center Lobby through September 30.
Esson is a mixed media artist who primarily works with acrylics. Based in St. Louis, Missouri, her work had been featured locally and internationally. Her work uses bright colors and energetic line movement and can be described as surreal and dream-like. Esson has completed 15 Public Artworks since 2009. More of her art is available on her website at www.genevieveessonart.com.
